🕵️ Case File Update: Into the Wild & Back to the Desk

Detectives, our latest mission took us deep into the wilderness—Lindeman Lake. Surrounded by tall evergreens, sparkling water, and crisp mountain air, we gathered evidence not from books or numbers but from nature itself. The hike was both challenging and rewarding, and the case notes are clear: Lindeman Lake was beautiful.

A big thank-you to all families and field agents who helped detectives get properly equipped for this adventure. Sturdy shoes, packed lunches, and positive attitudes made the mission a success. Well done, team!

📖 New Mission: The French Quiz (Wednesday)

This week, detectives face a new challenge: a French Quiz on Wednesday.

Case Notes to Review:

Remember your vocabular words, and check your notes on verb endings:

Person Singular Ending Plural Ending
1st Person -e (je) -ons (nous)
2nd Person -es (tu) -ez (vous)
3rd Person -e (il/elle) -ent (ils/elles)

Remember: watch for those tiny details—singular vs. plural can change the meaning of the whole sentence. Detectives who study carefully will crack the case wide open.

➗ Math Mission: Quiz (Thursday)

Another test of skill is coming—our Math Quiz on Thursday.

Case prep:

  • Review your math packet from the long weekend.

  • Check your understanding of the problems you worked on—are you confident in solving them without clues?

  • Focus on showing your thinking step by step. A good detective leaves a clear trail of evidence.

From mountain trails to classroom challenges, our team of sleuths continues to sharpen their minds and gather the clues needed for success. Stay focused, detectives—the mysteries of learning never rest!

Case File Update: Detectives on the Trail of Discovery

The investigation continues in Portable 6, and our junior detectives are sharpening their skills with every clue they uncover. Here’s what’s been happening in the field this week:

📖 Writing Mission: The Picture Book Case

Detectives are starting work on their very own picture books—stories inspired by their interests. To gather clues, we’re investigating:

  • What sparks excitement in your detective’s life?

  • What do they look like when they’re fully in the moment—smiling, laughing, yelling, or even jumping for joy?

  • Can they paint the scene with vivid details we can see in our minds?

Families, help by interrogating your young author: ask them to describe a favorite activity in detail and share what emotions show up when they’re enjoying it.

🔬 Science Sleuthing: The Scientific Method

This week’s lab files are all about experiments. Detectives are practicing how to:

  • Form a hypothesis (an educated guess about what might happen).

  • Change one variable at a time while keeping everything else constant.

  • Record what happens and see if their predictions hold up.

Encourage your detective at home: try experimenting with simple play—stack blocks, spin tops, mix water with different materials—and ask, “What do you think will happen?”

➗ Math Mystery: Detecting Patterns

Math this week is all about cracking the code of sequences. Detectives are investigating:

  • How is the pattern changing?

  • Is it a consistent addition or subtraction?

  • Or is it a multiplying pattern that grows faster and faster?

Every number leaves a trail—our sleuths are learning how to follow it.

📚 Reading Intel: Logical Fallacies

Detectives are on the lookout for bad arguments in disguise. These logical fallacies try to trick us into believing nonsense. Try throwing one at your detective and see if they catch it:

  • Appeal to the People – “Everyone else believes it, so it must be true!”

  • Faulty Authority – “My cousin’s neighbor said so, therefore it’s correct.”

  • Red Herring – “Forget the problem—look over there!”

  • Special Pleading – “The rules apply to everyone… except me.”

  • Strawman – “You said you like pizza, so you must hate every other food!”

Can your detective detect the faulty reasoning?

🕵️ Case File Update: Week Two in Portable 6

Detectives, our first investigations are already uncovering valuable clues. Two weeks in, and the evidence is piling up—pointing to courage, curiosity, and discovery. Here’s the latest intel from the field.

📚 Evidence Collected: This Week in School

  • Literature Case Study – The King’s Equal
We uncovered how timid kindness can grow into the courage to stand up against tyranny, and how even a tyrant can learn the humility to listen and discover the treasure of true friendship.

  • Critical Thinking
Detectives practiced spotting logical fallacies—those sneaky tricks that try to disguise bad ideas as good ones. A sharp mind is the best defense against deception.

  • Math Investigations
Numbers became our tools of deduction as we applied math to problem-solving. Detectives learned that every equation is another step toward cracking a case.

  • Science Lab – Rocket Launch
Using the scientific method, we tested how rocket parts affect their flight. Some flew straight, some spun out, but every launch gave us new data for the files.

  • Bible Curriculum
We’ve begun a new mission: digging deeper into the meaning of our memory verse. Check your detective’s study guide for the clues sent home.

  • Drama Games
Confidence and expression are key for undercover work. Through drama, detectives are building communication skills to make their voices strong and clear.

September 2

In the quiet corners of Highroad Academy, a light glows from Portable 6. Inside, the year’s mysteries wait to be uncovered. Welcome, junior detectives—my name’s Mr. Wolfsen, and I’ll be your case captain as we investigate puzzles of learning, identity, and discovery. Together, we’ll track down clues, follow leads, and unravel the riddles of the world around us.

This year’s casebook begins with the basics: preparing your detective kit, finding your headquarters, and learning how to navigate our schedule. Let’s dive in.

🧰 Detective Gear: Tools of the Trade

Every good sleuth knows the importance of proper equipment. Make sure your detective tools are clearly labeled with your name—supplies have a way of disappearing in the fog of investigation.

Here’s what you’ll need in your case file:

  • Bible

  • Pencil case

  • Gym outfit

  • 2 boxes of Kleenex

  • Headphones

Having your gear ready will help you crack the first mysteries of lockers, desks, and daily routines.

📍 Headquarters: Portable 6

Your base of operations is Portable 6, stationed right beside the grand archives—also known as the library. It’s here that you’ll sift through evidence, chase down clues, and sharpen your detective instincts.

Access Points

  • Detectives enter through the East door each morning.

  • If families need to visit, knock at the West door—a signal only trusted insiders know.

⏰ The Detective’s Clock

Every case requires precision timing. Here’s how our first day unfolds:

  • First Day of school – 8:20 am – Doors open for parents and students to explore their new headquarters.

  • 8:35 am – Daily investigations officially begin. Tardiness requires clearance from the office before slipping into Portable 6.

  • 11:30 am – First-day dismissal. Case closed… for now.

(Regular dismissal will be 2:45 pm once full days begin.)

🌭 The Back-to-School BBQ: A Night Operation

Mark your calendars: Wednesday, September 3rd.

  • 5:00 – 5:45 pmOpen House: Junior detectives invite their families to tour headquarters, meet the chief investigator (that’s me), and pick up early intel on the year ahead.

  • 5:45 – 7:00 pmThe Feast: Hot dogs, laughter, and reconnaissance. A perfect chance to mingle, observe, and sharpen your instincts.
