Homework Philosophy
The homework I give will be assignments from class that need to be finished. The math packets that come home are for students to check their understanding. They are not graded, but students should spend some time with them to prepare for the quizzes and tests, doing at least all the checked problems and looking over the others to make sure they understand or ask questions about in class.
If there are no assignments sent home, I believe students should choose how they want to build skills and enrich their minds.
For skill building, I suggest the following:
- Math
- Xtramath
- Delta Math
- Offline: Hundreds Chart practice
- Reading
- Writing
- Typing club
- Offline: Copy great texts, songs or poems
- Language
- Bible
However, I think probably the most important activity that students can do to prepare their minds for academics and a successful life is to enrich their mind knowledge that ignites their curiosity and helps build connections to what they learn.
For enrichment, I suggest:
- Exploring the world, having new experiences and building a vocabulary to describe them to others with vivid details.
- Reading nonfiction books that follow their interests, whether it’s dinosaurs, Vikings, or sports.
- Science videos (may require some previewing for appropriate content)
- History videos (may require some previewing for appropriate content)
